Speaker Johnson Urges Action on Southern Border

Senate recesses for the holidays without a deal.

A week after the House of Representatives recessed for the holidays, the Senate has also gone home. They did not reach a deal for aid to Ukraine, aid to Israel, or addressing the southern border.

House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana sent a letter to President Biden urging him to take executive action to address the migrant surge. He urged reinstatement of prior policies on asylum, such as the Remain in Mexico program. The speaker also said the removal of illegal immigrants should be expedited “so that aliens are screened and immediately removed if they cannot demonstrate asylum eligibility.” He added, “The wide-open border has caused unspeakable human tragedy for migrants and certainly for our own citizens.”

President Biden said he is sending Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and White House Homeland Security Adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall to Mexico to meet with President Lopez Obrador to discuss “future actions that can be taken together to address current border challenges.”

Some estimates have more than 10,000 people making illegal entry into the U.S. every day, not counting the “got-aways.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and his administration officials as they discuss immigration policy with Mexican leaders.
  • For Speaker Johnson to be led by the Lord as he heads the House of Representatives.
  • For federal legislators to be discerning regarding funding allocations.
